But first the three teenagers need to raise enough cash to pay for their travel to Kenya.

Jessica Cooper, Robert Craven and Matthew Fell need to raise £2,200 each to fund their 22-day trip.

The three friends will set off in July to work alongside local people to help improve school facilities for children and teenagers living in some of the poorest parts of Kenya.

Horbury School pupil Jessica, 15, said: “I’m really excited about going. It’s going to be hard work but we’ve had some training weekends to learn the skills we need for the sort of things we will be doing out there.

“We’ve been raising money for a while and so far I’ve got around £1,200 but if we don’t raise enough it means we can’t go and I would be really disappointed.”

So far the Explorer Scouts have held coffee mornings in Horbury Methodist Church to boost their funds.

And in May and June they will be helping to pack bags at the Co-operative Supermarket, on High Street.

Their trip is part of an ongoing relationship between the Explorer Scouts and Kenya.

Jessica, Robert, aged 17, and Matthew, aged 13, will also be helping to repair schools which have previously been built for local school children.

All three teenagers had to go through a selection process to prove they have the skills and determination needed before being chosen.
